What is TICAD?

TICAD (Tokyo International Conference on African Development) is an international conference focused on Africa's development. Since 1993, it has been led by the Government of Japan in collaboration with the United Nations, UNDP, World Bank, and African Union Commission (AUC).
The 8th TICAD was held in Tunis, Tunisia, on August 27–28, 2022, with participation from 48 African countries (including 20 heads of state). From Japan, Prime Minister Kishida participated online, and Foreign Minister Hayashi (as the Prime Minister's Special Envoy) attended in person.
The next TICAD 9 is scheduled to be held in Yokohama from August 20–22, 2025.

Purpose

To reflect the voices of African and Japanese youth in the TICAD process.
By presenting a future vision and action proposals toward 2055 from the youth perspective, we aim to demonstrate the power of youth solidarity and co-creation to the world.
The event also provides a platform for Japanese and African youth to build connections and discuss concrete ways of cooperation for implementation.

Event Schedule & Program

1. August 18–19: Youth Agenda Simulation (JICA Yokohama)
  • Participants: 100 (50 from Africa, 50 from Japan)
  • Discussions in 5 working groups based on proposal themes
  • Co-creation of action declarations, guest lectures, and fieldwork
2. August 20: Youth Drive (Pacifico Yokohama)
  • Presentation of proposals to TICAD main conference co-organizers
  • Intergenerational and Japan-Africa co-creation panel discussions
3. August 20: Cultural Evening (JICA Yokohama)
  • Music, dance, and performances by young artists from Africa and Japan
  • Cultural exchange event to deepen mutual understanding and solidarity

Recruitment Overview

  • Event Dates: August 18 (Mon) – 20 (Wed), 2025
  • Number of Participants: Around 100 general participants from Japan and Africa
  • Currently recruiting for Day 1 (August 18) and Day 2 (August 19) only.
    Recruitment for Day 3 (August 20) will start in the future.

    Connect directly not only with youth but also with government officials, international organizations, NGOs, and other TICAD stakeholders.

    Experience how your voice and actions can impact policies and the direction of the international community.

How to Apply

The application process consists of two steps:

  1. Step 1 (Deadline: June 15): General Application – Fill in your personal information, background, and motivation for applying.
  2. Step 2 (Deadline: June 17): Project Proposal Submission – Submit a detailed proposal for an ongoing or planned initiative aligned with one of the six pillars of "Youth Agenda 2055".

Eligibility

  • Age: 15–39 years old
  • Nationality: Japan or Africa (no restriction on place of residence)
  • Passion for social change: Those actively engaged in social entrepreneurship, policy making, or community leadership. Especially those who want to accelerate or develop their ideas or projects, or are looking for like-minded peers and practical partners.
  • Commitment to sustainable development: Strong interest in themes such as health, education, economic development, peace and stability, cultural exchange, and sustainability.
  • Cooperativeness and open-mindedness: Willingness to collaborate with peers from diverse backgrounds and cultures to co-create solutions for a better future.
  • Proactiveness and motivation: Able to participate in all three days plus two pre-event online orientations (once at the end of July and once in early August), and actively contribute ideas and participate in discussions and activities.
